Cell Phone Rentals
Whether you are living in or visiting the beautiful city of Merida, staying in touch with your loved ones back home is important. For many people it is confusing and/or costly to dial long distance from the US to get through to you and with that in mind, comes the idea of a US number cell phone that you can get right here in Merida. The advantages to using this phone for your communication with the USA are several:
Cost - Cheaper for them to call you; cheaper for you to call them.
The cost per call to YOU is 25 cents USD per minute. That is, if someone calls you from home, they don’t pay anything as most plans in the US are now national and calls to any number in the US is just a local call. So they don’t pay anything and it only costs you 25 cents per minute. If you are calling them, the same rate applies, which is quite a bit cheaper than the 75 cents per minute you would pay on a TelCel pay as you go phone here.
Convenience and Ease of Use – folks back home just dial the number as they normally would, as it is a US number. No country codes, no extra numbers, no operator talking to them in Spanish. I know all about this as my Dad has a permanent problem calling me here in Merida. He can never get through and always claims my phones are not working. OK, he’s 73 but still. This phone number has ended that problem for him (and stopped the complaining)
The business advantage - if you are a businessperson here in Merida and have clients and/or customers in the US and Canada, how great would it be if you were able to offer them instant communication with you at no cost to them? Having an AT&T rental phone with a US number at their disposal is like having your company’s or services 1-800 number in your pocket.
I have several plans for rentals, ranging from short term ie 7 days (minimum) and 14 days to 21 days and monthly and on to an annual plan. Delivery is free within the city of Merida and the deposit is reasonable and 100% refundable. You only pay the inexpensive rental fee and minutes required.
My husband and I will be in Merida beginning Jan. 4th for a month. I am interested in information re rental of a cell phone that can call the States cheaper than my own phone. Could you explain what you have available and the rate for calls back to the States. Muchas gracias.

My husband and I will be staying in Progreso, Yucatan for 2 weeks and my question is basically the same as Cheryl. We would like to stay in touch with our families in the U.S. so would appreciate your advice on how to do that as economically as possible but with good reception.

What about calls to family in Merida while I am in Merida. I will be arriving in March and have many family members in: Merida, Cansahcab, Dzidzantun and Chabihau. I purchased a phone without a plan (pay as you go) while I was there in November but for long term I want something a little more versatile.

What kind of versatility did you have in mind? The local number phones are basic, solid little Nokia phones.
I highly recommend renting a cell phone for your trip to the Merida area from William Lawson. We rented from him during our 10 day stay in February and could not have been more pleased. We reserved the phone with them prior to the trip and Ralf met us at our hotel when we arrived to deliver the phone and answer any questions we had about usage. He came to us to when we were ready to return it. The price was great (calls were 25 cents a minute), it had a US phone number making it easy for our family in the US to contact us, and the customer service was outstanding. A great experience for a great trip!
I will be in Merida for the month of March and would be interested in renting a cell phone. We don’t anticipate making many calls to the US but would want it primarily for local calls. Please let me know what you suggest.

We were very pleased with the price and service provided. We were in Merida for two weeks and the cell phone was delivered to our hotel in Centro free of charge. He answered our questions about Merida and gave us tips for what to see and do. He also checked with us during our visit to make sure that everything was fine. I highly recommed renting a cell phone from William Lawson. You will not be disappointed in the service or price!
